How Card Counting Works

Running Count Explained

Card counting tracks the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the shoe. The Hi-Lo system is the most popular method. Each card has a value: 2-6 = +1, 7-9 = 0, 10-A = -1. As cards are dealt, you add or subtract from a running total.

A positive running count means more low cards have been dealt, leaving more high cards in the shoe. This favors the player โ€“ more blackjacks, better double down opportunities, and higher dealer bust probability.

True Count and Deck Penetration

Running count alone doesn't tell the full story. A +6 count with 4 decks remaining is weaker than +6 with 1 deck remaining. True count solves this: divide running count by decks remaining.

Example: Running count +8, approximately 2 decks left. True count = +8 รท 2 = +4. This is a strong player advantage.

Hard Hands vs Soft Hands

What is a Hard Hand?

A hard hand has no Ace, or has an Ace that must count as 1 to avoid busting. Examples: 10+7 = Hard 17. 10+5+A = Hard 16 (Ace must be 1). Hard hands carry bust risk on every hit.

Hard 12-16 are the toughest hands in blackjack. Hit and you might bust. Stand and the dealer might beat you. Basic strategy uses dealer upcard to determine which risk is smaller.

What is a Soft Hand?

A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. Examples: A+6 = Soft 17. A+2+4 = Soft 17. The advantage: you cannot bust by taking one more card. If you hit soft 17 and get a 10, you have hard 17 โ€“ not bust.

This flexibility means soft hands play more aggressively. Soft 17 hits against most dealer cards, while hard 17 always stands. The calculator recognizes soft versus hard automatically based on your card entries.

Why the Strategy Differs

Soft hands double down more often because the downside is limited. Soft 16 doubles against dealer 4-6. Hard 16 never doubles โ€“ too risky. The tool shows different recommendations for the same total depending on whether an Ace is involved.

Real Hand Scenarios

Scenario 1: Hard 16 vs Dealer 10

You're dealt 10-6. Dealer shows 10. Your gut says stand โ€“ 16 feels close to 21. Here's the math:

If you stand: Dealer makes 17+ about 77% of the time. You win only when dealer busts (23%). Expected loss: -$54 per 100 hands.

If you hit: You bust 62% of the time. But when you don't bust, you often win. Expected loss: -$50 per 100 hands.

Hitting saves $4 per 100 hands. It feels wrong, but the math is clear. The calculator shows HIT with confidence.

Scenario 2: Soft 18 vs Dealer 9

You're dealt A-7. Looks like a solid 18. Most players stand. They're wrong.

Dealer showing 9 makes 19+ often. Your 18 loses more than it wins. But here's the twist: if you hit and get A, 2, or 3, you improve. Get 10 and you have hard 18 โ€“ same position. Only 4-6 hurt you, and even then you can hit again.

Expected value of standing: -$18 per 100 hands. Expected value of hitting: -$10 per 100 hands. The calculator recommends HIT.

When to Split Pairs

Always Split These Pairs

A-A: Two shots at blackjack are better than starting with soft 12. This is the most profitable split in blackjack.

8-8: Hard 16 is the worst hand in blackjack. Splitting gives you two chances to build something better. Even if both hands lose, the expected loss is smaller than playing 16.

Never Split These Pairs

10-10: You're holding 20. Only 21 beats you. Splitting throws away a near-certain win hoping for two wins. The math says keep it.

5-5: Hard 10 is an excellent double down hand. Splitting turns a great situation into two mediocre ones. Always treat 5-5 as 10, not as a pair.

4-4: Hard 8 has better expected value than two hands starting with 4. Exception: some rule sets favor splitting against dealer 5-6.

Conditional Splits

2-2, 3-3: Split against dealer 2-7. Stand or hit against 8-A.

6-6: Split against dealer 2-6 only. Dealer 7+ means hit your 12 instead.

7-7: Split against 2-7. Against dealer 8+, hit your 14.

9-9: Split against 2-9 except 7. Against dealer 7, stand โ€“ your 18 beats their likely 17. Against 10-A, stand and hope.

Should I hit on 16?

Against dealer 7 or higher: Yes, hit. Dealer will make 17+ most of the time, so your 16 loses anyway. Hitting gives you a chance to improve. Against dealer 2-6: Stand. Dealer is likely to bust, so don't risk busting yourself first.

Should I split 8s against dealer Ace?

Yes. It feels suicidal, but hard 16 is worse. Our simulation showed splitting 8s against Ace loses $52 per 100 hands. Standing on 16 against Ace loses $54. Hitting loses $51. All options are bad, but splitting isn't the worst.

Should I double down on 11 vs Ace?

In multi-deck games: No. The dealer's Ace makes blackjack possible (after checking hole card). Expected value of doubling drops below hitting. Single deck: Yes, double. Fewer cards mean less chance dealer has blackjack. The calculator adjusts for deck count.

Should I take insurance?

Never. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack when showing Ace. It pays 2:1, but dealer only has blackjack 30.8% of the time. Long-term, insurance costs $7.69 per 100 bets. This tool never recommends insurance.

Is card counting illegal?
