That profit factor column tells the real story. UTG hands reach showdown less often but win more when they get there. Button hands show down more frequently but face tougher competition. The big blind is a profit graveyard even with an 82% playing frequency.
Why Button Showdowns Lose Money
Most guides say the button is the most profitable position. Technically true for overall winnings, but showdown equity is weaker than you’d think. You’re playing 28.7% of hands from the button compared to 12.4% from UTG. That extra range includes suited connectors, weak aces, and marginal pocket pairs that frequently make second-best hands.
I lost $340 over three months playing too many speculative hands from the button that reached showdown with weak pairs or missed draws that accidentally hit something. My button showdown win rate was 49.3% – literally a coin flip. Compare that to UTG where I folded garbage preflop and only saw showdowns with legitimate holdings at 58.2% winners.

Big blind showdowns are brutal. Nearly one in five times you reach showdown from the BB, you’re showing down ace high or a busted draw. That’s the cost of defending your blind with marginal holdings against late position raises.
The surprising finding: UTG shows down two pair or better 44.2% of the time. You’re not just playing premium pairs and AK from early position. You’re catching sets, making straights with pocket pairs, and hitting two pair with suited connectors. Those hands print money at showdown because nobody expects UTG to show up with 87s that flopped two pair.
Multiway Versus Heads-Up Showdown Frequencies

The button advantage shrinks in multiway pots. Going from 35.2% showdown frequency heads-up down to 9.8% with five players is a 72% reduction. Early position drops from 28.7% to 6.2% – a 78% reduction. Position helps, but volume of opponents matters more.

The missing variable is pot size. Loose button play reached showdown more often in small pots. Selective button play reached showdown less frequently but in bigger pots where I had stronger holdings.
